MKM Health with Patientrack, announced as finalist for the inaugural NZHIT innovation award
The innovation award has recently been established by NZHIT (formerly known as the NZ Health IT Cluster, the peak industry body), to recognise the “innovation, investment and hard work that goes into creating solutions that have a positive impact on the delivery of healthcare services”. MKM Health, the ANZ distributor of Patientrack, was announced as one of four finalists for this award on Tuesday.
Patientrack uses simple modern technology, such as tablet computers, smart phones and WiFi to put powerful real-time information into the hands of nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals. It delivers electronic vital signs capture, electronic charts, personalised patient care planning and monitoring, automated alerting of clinicians, patient assessments & screenings, workflow, handover, task management, real time communication, configurable 'at a glance' views of patient data, and ward to board performance dashboards. All this is available anytime, anywhere to ensure that patients receive the best care and the clinical workforce is able to deliver more efficient care in a more personalised and prioritised manner that ensures all patients get the care they need, when they need it.
Patientrack was the brain-child of New Zealand trained Intensive Care Specialist – Professor Michael Buist. Internationally recognised for his research into issues impacting patient safety, Prof Buist was also involved in the early development of Medical Emergency Teams (MET). He was convinced that the smart use of technology was essential to improving patient safety on the general ward and this could be done through automating the process of recognising and responding to a patient who is deteriorating on the general ward. Much of the software development for the Patientrack product has been carried out in New Zealand, and the Auckland development team is still involved in its ongoing development - providing 24x7 support to Patientrack’s international user base.
First implemented at Central Manchester Foundation Trust NHS in the UK, Patientrack has quickly been adopted by many other NHS trusts in the UK. In late 2015 Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) was the first New Zealand DHB to implement the system. The benefits to the patients and staff at CDHB have been immediate and nurses are enjoying having to spend less time on filling in forms and more time caring for their patients. Following the CDHB implementation, other DHBs are expected to implement Patientrack over the next 12 months.
Since its initial clinical trial, Patientrack has been focused on the broader challenges of delivering safer and more efficient patient care across the health sector with its product development roadmap being driven by customer service improvement initiatives and by emerging eHealth trends. Patientrack has an active international user group that promotes collaborative research and shares innovations in clinical care across the various health systems to which members belong.
Kate Quirke, CEO for MKM Health says “we very excited to be selected as a finalist for this award, NZ has continually demonstrated they are innovators in the health industry, and it was therefore not surprising to see New Zealand DHBs being among the first sites in ANZ to embrace this next generation of health IT solutions. These solutions will play a vital role in helping the health sector meet increasing demands on its services by delivering more efficient and safer care while at the same time improving the patient’s experience and outcomes”.
“This award is a great acknowledgement for the hard work and dedication of our teams across New Zealand, Australia and the UK; but also a big nod to our clients who challenge us to keep innovating to make our hospitals a safer and more productive place.”
The announcement of all NZHIT Innovation Award 2016 Finalists can be found on the NZHIT website.
The winner will be announced at the upcoming Healthcare Congress Awards Dinner at the Langham Hotel, Auckland on 21 June 2016.

Patientrack uses highly configurable rules to automatically calculate early warning scores to detect patients at risk and automatically alerts clinicians when interventions are needed. Through early identification of deteriorating patients, and the promoting of necessary assessments, Patientrack helps hospitals meet national and local targets for improvements in patient safety, improving patient outcomes and supporting frontline staff, while at the same time cutting costs and reducing the mountain of paperwork that accumulates in medical records. Patientrack was developed in conjunction with health professionals and its effectiveness in delivering both safer and more efficient care has been proven in a number of research papers published in peer-reviewed clinical journals.
